Ban called Wednesday for the release of Zimbabwean political prisoners after talks with Motlanthe at the start of a five-nation tour. He also repeated his support for the new unity government in Zimbabwe, where one-time opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was sworn in as prime minister nearly two weeks ago. But he called on 85-year-old President Robert Mugabe, who has ruled since independence from Britain in 1980, to do more to prove his commitment to the power-sharing deal by releasing the release of about 30 jailed activists.
