CHINHOYI — Hungry Zanu PF supporters fell over each other as they scrambled for food at President Robert Mugabe’s much hyped 85th birthday celebrations yesterday, where ordinary people were served boiled meat and sadza.

There was pandemonium as elderly people and youths rushed to the serving points soon after a combative Mugabe finished his winding speech.

Bouncers worked over time trying to control queues as people fought their way to get their portions of the ordinary meal served on plastic paper plates and old newspapers because of a shortage of plates.

For the people, there was no sign of the classy cuisine and expensive drinks budgeted for by the organisers of the North Korean-style event.

Top government officials, including Mugabe, had their lunch at a hotel where entry was restricted.

UPDATE ON MUJURU/DELCAMPO.....3.600kg gold dealings

Here is the first part of this Mujuru/Del Campo saga......

One of the diamonds that Nyasha tried to sell...

2 carat lot.....

3 carat lot......

4 carat lot......

5 carat lot........

Mai Mujuru implicated in blood diamonds

Zimbabwe’s vice President Joyce Mujuru threatened a senior executive of a British company with unspecified action after the company refused to handle $15 million worth of “blood diamonds” that her daughter wanted to sell.

The executive Bernd Hagemann, the head of Firstar Europe, a commodities trading company based in Warrington in the United Kingdom, said Mujuru phoned him after the company had blacklisted her, her husband Solomon Mujuru who is Zimbabwe’s former army commander, her daughter Nyasha, Nyasha's husband Pedro Del Campo and their South African agent Dancor Spies.

The Mujurus are on both the United States and the European Union sanctions lists.

Nyasha had tried to sell the company diamonds without a Kimberley Process certificate and said if they accepted, she could give the company generous discounts. The diamonds were allegedly from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe.

Nyasha currently lives in Spain, her husband's home country, but her husband does most of the business in Africa

She had tried to sell the same company 3,700 kg of gold which she said was from the Democratic Republic of Congo. When the company told her that it could not handle “blood” gold, she said she could have the origin changed to another country such as Kenya.

Though he could not remember the exact date Hagemann said Mrs Mujuru had phoned him in late December last year demanding that his company should remove her name and that of her daughter from their blacklist otherwise she would send people to visit his company and "see what happens".

“It was not a long call," Hagemann said. "She didn’t say she would kill me or something like that. But her tone did not sound good at all.”

Nyasha had offered the company 13 two-carat diamonds valued at $381,437.80. The package also included five three-carat diamonds valued at $626,710.40, thirteen four-carat diamonds valued at $3,904,356.20 and twenty five-carat diamonds valued at $10,961,842.20.

Hagemann said the negotiations were done by Felix Eimer who had to use a pseudonym for “security reasons” because when Nyasha contacted the company they knew very little about Zimbabwe. They had only been offered one manifest because they did not deal in diamonds without a Kimberley certificate.

“My understanding was that Nyasha was doing the business but her mother was the financier,” Hagemann said.

Hagemann said the company was now talking about the deal openly because they now had adequate police protection in all the countries where they operated.

Firstar International Group was founded 1986 in Atlanta, Georgia, by Former Governor of Florida, Wayne Mixson, E.Lamar Bailey and Mr.Muhsin Al-Hashimi. Firstar Europe Ltd. was founded in Warrington, United Kingdom, for trading in raw materials. It has offices in Europe, Ecuador, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait and Dubai.
Mrs Mujuru has reportedly been heavily involved in diamonds and had a claim at Marange’s Chiadzwa which was popularly known as “churu chamai Mujuru” (Mrs Mujuru’s antihill).

Her husband is understood to have had a small stake in the concession when it belonged to Africa Consolidated Resources, though the company which is listed on London’s Alternative Market Index denies this.

Mujuru also has a stake in River Ranch Diamond Mine near Beitbridge. The mine received assistance from a United Nations-owned company, Africa Management Services Company (AMSCO), between 2004 and 2007 and there were allegations that United Nations Development Programme vehicles might have been used to smuggle diamonds from the mine to South Africa.

A special UNDP investigation, former South African head of the crack Scorpions police unit, Frank Dutton, was hired by the UNDP to investigate the allegations from July to December last year.
His report has not yet been released.

Mrs Joyce Mujuru

Zimbabwe's vice-president foiled in 3,600kg gold deal

Joyce Mujuru used her daughter as a go-between to seek a deal for the gold, according to Firstar, a commodities trader based in Britain, which says that it was approached in November.

Mrs Mujuru, appointed by Robert Mugabe five years ago, is among the 200 Zimbabweans under European Union and United States sanctions for alleged human rights abuses.

Firstar claims that Mrs Mujuru’s daughter and Spanish son-in-law, Nyasha and Pedro del Campo, offered to sell 3,700kg of gold for $90 million to Firstar Europe Ltd, a precious metal dealer. At the present market rate, one kilo of gold sells for $30,700 (£21,500).

Mr del Campo allegedly e-mailed Firstar offering 3.7 tonnes of gold nuggets with a certificate of origin from the Democratic Republic of Congo and $15 million of diamonds without certification. He claimed to represent two commodities companies, Onesafara International and Berline Equities Corp. But over the course of the correspondence, it allegedly came to light that the real seller was Mrs Mujuru.

Zimbabwean Minister Sekai Holland speaks from Harare

ELIZABETH JACKSON: Our Africa correspondent Andrew Geoghegan has just returned from Zimbabwe where he witnessed the swearing in of the country's new government of national unity.

He caught up with Senator Sekai Holland who's become the Minister for Reconciliation and National Healing.

Sekai Holland is a founding member of the Movement for Democratic Change and has spent much of her time in Australia raising awareness of her country's plight.

She was severely beaten by the Mugabe regime two years ago, but is now hopeful that Zimbabwe can begin a healing process.

SEKAI HOLLAND: By going into the inclusive government, and MDC has gone in whole heartedly, we must make things work. The new struggle, the new process, is to set up the very structures of conflict resolution of making Zimbabweans understand that there is no going back, there is no other route except to get Zimbabweans working together.

That is what the challenge right now is and MDC is determined that we're going to stay inside the agreement and actually wage our opening up of democratic space from within that united front.

ANDREW GEOGHEGAN: But Sekai Holland, you've been telling me about the MDC youth who are fed up with what's going on and they're disappointed that the MDC has gone into government with Zanu-PF.

SEKAI HOLLAND: Yes, but the challenge for the youths is to find a viable, peaceful alternative to what we have done, because if we don't go inside there is no other viable, peaceful method of moving Zimbabwe forward.

And MDC was founded on the principal of non-violence.

ANDREW GEOGHEGAN: Do you think though the MDC is in danger of falling into a trap set by Robert Mugabe, that the party will eventually be swallowed by Zanu-PF, that MDC members may be corrupted by Robert Mugabe?

SEKAI HOLLAND: You know, when we went through the debates within the party, international executives and international council, it's really sad that we Africans don't right things, because there is an understanding that it's betrayal if you talk about it.

But those two last meetings were the most beautiful, most profound, most challenging meetings I've attended in my life. The issue of being swallowed up took most of the time; 10 provinces out of 12 dismissed that we could be swallowed up because MDC is a people's project. We're not in 1983, we're now in 2009 and that is Zanu-PF culture and thinking has really died a natural death.

What's going to happen, this is what the country's arrived at, some people who come into the decision making structures that have been set up may become seduced and fall in the trap of a corruption culture.

But it's individuals who fall by the wayside, but not MDC, MDC's a people's project. It will always be there.

ANDREW GEOGHEGAN: Yet it strikes me that your cause for a democratic and free Zimbabwe still has a very long way to go.

SEKAI HOLLAND: Very long way because we've lost a lot. I mean... the...

ANDREW GEOGHEGAN: Does it also mean you have to get rid of Robert Mugabe?

SEKAI HOLLAND: We've got in an agreement where he is the President of the country, but I think that also, for me, it's very interesting that the whole debate keeps going back to one person who is mortal.

And immortality, when you get a certain age you do have to retire, whether you want it or not because you become dysfunctional and I think, for me, that gives me a lot of comfort, that that's the natural course that things will take.

But the more important thing is that already by going into the deal we go with our policies, we go with our programmes, we go with our people who, for 10 years, have been working to infuse this into the new Zimbabwe.

What we're dealing with is not an individual, Robert Mugabe, it is the Zanu-PF culture - of violence, of corruption, of really never accepting an agreement, of impunity - those are the cultural traits that MDC is having to work against every day and which Zimbabwean society, in voting on March 29, totally rejected.

So I have no problem with Mugabe being there in a life. What I have a problem with is whether we understand the depth of what we have to change and really prepare for ourselves for that really difficult task.

ANDREW GEOGHEGAN: And it is early days, but nothing has changed yet. You made it aware to me that even you do not know the cholera epidemic, for instance, because you're saying the Government is keeping Zimbabwe in the dark about that.

SEKAI HOLLAND: Excuse me, the culture of keeping people in the dark is what we have lived with for 30 years! I mean... from day to day...

ANDREW GEOGHEGAN: So even...

SEKAI HOLLAND: No, no I'm saying from day to day you have to find out what's happening in the country from your own contacts, and you have to then adjust with what you have been told at the official level. That has been the reality for 30 years, so nothing has changed there except that as the epidemics spreads...

ANDREW GEOGHEGAN: But with the MDC part of the Government, shouldn't the party be insisting that there be openness in this country?

SEKAI HOLLAND: We are in charge of health, we are in change of some ministries which are actually going to allow us to do that and I think those will be actually much more upfront with information and data because we believe that information is power and if people are informed they know exactly how to protect themselves.

ANDREW GEOGHEGAN: Okay, so the fight goes on but still a long way to go.

SEKAI HOLLAND: Well, it's a very long way to go because where we started in 1980 and where Mugabe has left us 30 years down the road is a long distance from the goals.

But we've been able to fight non-violently and get back on course and together as a country we are moving forward, and we can feel the movement forward because it's not the same Zimbabwe last week as it is today.

Police told a magistrate he was accused of attempting to commit terrorism; banditry and sabotage; conspiring to acquire arms to disrupt essential services; illegal possession of fire arms and weapons; and attempting to leave the country illegally, the party said. Mugabe's birthday present: purge of last white farmers

A SECRET plan has been hatched by President Robert Mugabe's most loyal supporters to evict the last of Zimbabwe's white farmers from their land before his 85th birthday.
He is already planning to celebrate the occasion with vast quantities of champagne and caviar, even though half his country faces starvation.

But just in case the Bollinger does not provide enough fizz, his acolytes are preparing an extra surprise: a fresh onslaught against Zimbabwe's last white farmers.

A local photographer said on February 15 that he and another journalist were allegedly attacked outside the residence as they investigated a report by Britain's Sunday Times about Mugabe's possible ownership of the luxury property. The Sunday Times reported recently Mugabe and his wife Grace have secretly bought the 5.8-million-USD property in the city's Tai Po district, which the report said was the first in Asia to be identified as the Mugabes'. The report also claimed the Mugabes have stashed away millions of dollars in Asian bank accounts, although nearly half the population of Zimbabwe is dependent on food aid while a cholera epidemic has claimed more than 2,700 lives.

If they pretend they don’t know what you are talking about, or claim it is not a police station, keep talking and make sure you convey your message.

Please be calm and measured and polite. No matter how angry you are by the outrageous actions, it won’t help Roy Bennett if you lose your temper.

Please let me know how you got on via the comments.

**MY MESSAGE TO ZIMBABWEANS IN ZIMBABWE AND TO ''sokwanele'' WHAT ABOUT JESTINA MUKOKO.......???
DON'T LET US FORGET HER....PLEASE SHE IS IN VERY BAD HEALTH AND NEEDS OUR SUPPORT SO BADLY......**

12 February 2009: Three of the most seriously ill political detainees were finally given proper unrestricted access to medical doctors on Thursday, but were forced back to prison. Civic leader Jestina Mukoko, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s former aide Ghandi Mudzingwa, and 72-year old MDC activist Fidelis Chiramba were taken to the Avenues Clinic, where they were seen by two doctors – from the state, and the private sector.

But despite both doctors agreeing that the three should be hospitalised, they were still sent back to Chikurubi Maximum Prison early Thursday evening.

Irene Petras from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), who was at the Avenues clinic, said both the state and the private doctor had recommended that the detainees needed to stay in hospital but there were ‘instructions’ that the three should be returned to jail.

She said the victims have suffered many injuries, from the time they were abducted and while being held incommunicado in detention. Their condition had deteriorated because they had not received adequate medical treatment while in jail.

**Update via MDC Press Release  - Police change charges yet again : Sunday, 11:25**
Police in Mutare have yet again changed charges against MDC Treasurer General and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate, Roy Bennett. He has now been charged under Section 61 of the notorious, colonial, Apartheid type law, Public Order and Security Act (POSA)-conspiring to acquire arms with a view to disrupting essential services.

These charges have long been discredited and shown to be fictious. Clearly they are on a fishing expedition, clutching at straws and know fully well that there is no basis, even suspicion, at law to charge Roy Bennett. All these charges are politically motivated, driven by a vindictive and malicious political vendetta against Roy Bennett and the people of Zimbabwe who at this stage want the Inclusive government to get down to the real work of creating conditions for economic recovery and dismantling institutions of dictatorship, rather than attending to the egos of man and women who do not want to accept that change in Zimbabwe is inevitable.

As Roy Bennett himself has stated a Zimbabwe of “peace, freedom and democracy in our life time” is possible.

As we have stated consistently, apartheid and fascist laws such as POSA (and Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act) must be repealed. They are draconian legislation. A democratic Zimbabwe has no space for such repressive colonial legislation.
Roy Bennett must be released unconditionally and unharmed.

MDC Manicaland Provincial leadership, MDC members and ordinary Zimbabweans of all walks of life spent their second night at and around the police station, keeping a watchful eye. Police had intended to move Roy Bennett to a location they have refused to disclose.
Roy Bennett is in good spirits and says inmates in his over crowded cell have befriended him and have treated him well and with encouragement.

Update via AFP - Treason charges dropped : Sunday, 11:05

The treason charges against Zimbabwe ministerial nominee Roy Bennett have been dropped but replaced with attempt to commit terrorism, banditry and sabotage, his lawyer said on Sunday.

**Update via MDC Press Release - Lawyers granted access - the vigil will be maintained tonight: 19:25**

Lawyers representing MDC Treasurer General and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate, Roy Bennett have been granted access to their client, Roy Bennett.

They reported that Roy Bennett is strong, solid and resolute. He sends his message to all to remain unwaveringly dedicated to the cause of a just, peaceful, prosperous and democratic Zimbabwe. “Whatever these challenges, if we remain unwaveringly dedicated, we will achieve peace, freedom and democracy in our life time-believe me,” he said.

Lawyers say the police are now saying they cannot lay formal charges for now, and will try and work out formal charges on Monday. This clearly indicates that the treason charges are scandalous, frivolous, vexatious and have no basis in law, but are simply politically motivated. These charges have been long discredited and have been shown, like all treason charges leveled against MDC leadership, to be driven by vindictive political motives.

We demand Roy Bennett’s immediate unconditional release unharmed. The Treasurer General and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate needs to get to work with the collective leadership to deliver on their mandate to providing food, jobs, education and health to all Zimbabweans, responsibilities we have no doubt he will discharge with distinction.

Assistant Commissioner Mabunda and Chiminda Nahu from the Law and Order Section, both reported to have a direct ear with Robert Mugabe, are some of the people behind the arrest of Roy Bennett.
MDC Manicaland Provincial leadership and hundreds of MDC supporters and ordinary Zimbabweans of all walks of life are still gathered around the police station. The Provincial leadership of the MDC have indicated that they will spend their second night outside and around the police station.

They will hold a night vigil surrounding the police station to ensure that Roy Bennett is not secretly removed to a place police are refusing to disclose. They will continue to monitor the situation and provide moral support, as Roy Bennett has been informed of their presence.

Heavily armed police are patrolling the police station, but the situation is calm.
The inclusive government must get down to serious business of addressing the humanitarian crisis, create conditions for economic recovery and dismantle institutions of dictatorship. Abducting, arresting and detaining Roy Bennett, Jestina Mukoko and other human rights activists is against the spirit and letter of the Global Political Agreement and does not give confidence to the Inclusive government and the healing which the country desperately needs. All political prisoners must be released and all parties to the Inclusive government must conduct themselves in a manner that gives confidence to the process we have started.

Alert: Roy Bennett Arrested (updated 14:23)

* Latest update at the top.
Update from the MDC - Military Intelligence behind Roy Bennett arrest - 14:23

Via Press release - It is understood that the abduction, arrest and charging of MDC Treasurer General and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate Roy Bennett is being planned, directed and operationalised by the Zimbabwe Military Intelligence Directorate (MID), led by one Mzilikazi, and the Special Agency SAS, the torture unit of the army, led by one Manene . General Constantine Chiwenga is also party to it. These people are known for their declared passionate and fanatical hatred of Roy Bennett.

We are also aware of an intent to dump Roy Bennett into Chivero river.

It is futile and ill-considered for anyone to go against the very momentum of history. Change in Zimbabwe is inevitable. Bravado akin to ridding on top of a hungry lion in a time of unprecedented famine, hoping to remain in control of both lion and the natural process of weather is illogical. Any harm on Roy Bennett will be placed squarely on those responsible.
We demand the unconditional release of Roy Bennett unharmed so that he can attend to his normal duties in the party, in government and to his family.

The real issues are creating conditions for economic recovery and dismantling institutions of dictatorship. This is what all parties to the Inclusive government should be focusing on.
Another vehicle which is part of the operation is a Toyota Hilax with registration number ABD1317
In an earlier release, the MDC said:
State-interrogators from Harare are making their way to Mutare where MDC Treasurer General and Deputy Minister Agriculture designate, Roy Bennett, was being held. They said that lawyers representing Roy Bennett have been told that they can only see him at 1600hrs.

Update - the  MDC have issued a retraction:  11:22
MDC Mutare Brian James has NOT been arrested. He’s fine and taking part in the vigil.
Update via MDC Press Release:  10:38
MDC Mutare Mayor Brian James who spent the night at Mutare police station, and attempted to give food to MDC Treasurer General and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate Roy Bennett has been arrested at the same police station where Roy Bennett is being held.
Update: Saturday morning

MDC Press Release - Police detaining MDC Treasurer General and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate, Roy Bennett have denied him food. MDC Mutare Mayor Brian James and MDC Manicaland Provincial leadership have unsuccessfully tried to negotiate with police to allow them to give him food.
Hundreds of MDC supporters and members spent the night outside Mutare police station where Roy Bennett is being held, demanding his release. They have also been keeping a watchful eye on all movements around the police station to make sure that police do not remove Roy Bennett from the Mutare police station to one of the torture and interrogation bases in Marondera or Goromonzi as police had attempted to do earlier in the day. The police station is heavily guarded by armed police.
After intially charging Roy Bennett with attempting to leave the country illegally, police have now charged him with treason.
Its is understood that the Chief State prosecutor is making his way to Mutare.

Full Cabinet list out

THE full list of ministerial appointees was announced yesterday by President Mugabe, who is set to swear them in today to finalise the formation of the inclusive Government in line with the broad-based agreement signed by the three main political parties in September last year.

Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda said 39 people would be appointed "ministers" but gave no information as to the portfolios they would be assigned.

According to the broad-based agreement, Zanu-PF will have 15 Cabinet portfolios, MDC-T 13 and the MDC three, to reflect the distribution of the popular vote in last year’s elections.

The agreement has already been modified by the appointment of two ministers from Zanu-PF and MDC-T to share the running of the Ministry of Home Affairs to bring the total of Cabinet ministers to 32.

MDC-T spokesperson Mr Nelson Chamisa last night speculated that two people would be appointed as Ministers of State in the offices of the President and Prime Minister.

In the list released last night, Zanu-PF had 21 names, 20 of them members of the last Cabinet with the addition of Cde Walter Mzembi, the former Deputy Minister of Water Resources and Infrastructure Development.

MDC-T had 14 names with some variation on the list issued on Monday.

Dropped from the final list was the party’s nominee for the Ministry of State Enterprises and Parastatals, Mr Eddie Cross, and Mr Abednico Bhebhe, an MDC legislator who had been nominated Minister of Water Resources Development and Management by Mr Tsvangirai.

Mr Chamisa said Mr Cross had been re-assigned while Mr Bhebhe, a member of the MDC, had been struck off the list after MDC voiced concern over his nomination by MDC-T.

"Mr Cross has been re-assigned after consultations and has been replaced by Mr Joel Gabuza Gabuza while Mr Bhebhe has been removed after circumstances that followed his appointment," he said.

Also on the new list is the leader of a group known as Bulawayo Agenda Mr Gordon Moyo, who makes up the MDC-T list of nominees.

MDC named four people, all from the party’s top leadership: Deputy president Mr Gibson Sibanda, secretary-general Professor Welshman Ncube and his deputy Mrs Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga plus the party’s sole legislator from Bulawayo, Sen David Coltart.

Sen Coltart is the only nominee with a seat in Parliament, meaning the other three will need to take up the party’s quota of appointed senators.

Dr Sibanda said the appointees should be at State House in Harare at 10am. "This is to enable their appointments as ministers after which will follow the swearing-in ceremony at 1pm," said Dr Sibanda.

He said only close families are invited to the ceremony and advised the appointees to adhere to the stipulated time.

The full list of appointees is as follows:

Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga

Born on 31 December 1966, Misihairabwi-Mushonga is a mother, an activist, an organiser and a leader of the struggle for social justice in Zimbabwe. She is as confident and eloquent chairing the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament as she is discussing bread and butter issues with the impoverished women, children and men of Zimbabwe. She has been a Member of Parliament for Glen Norah Constituency since 2000.

Misihairabwi-Mushonga is a human and civic rights champion who launched into politics through the women's movement. Together with Margaret Dongo, they were the most visible faces of the feisty opposition party – the Zimbabwe Union of Democrats, which she then left to join the MDC in 1999.

The exposure she received in the women's movement has shaped her into a person who is not easily intimidated by structures of authority. She entered politics through her activism in women’s movements and also at local government level. Misihairabwi-Mushonga had to fight and move mountains for her right to participate in a municipal election in the Supreme Court after she was initially disqualified on the basis of her age.

Beisdes being a passionate human and civil rights activist, she is a trained mass communicator and is also well-trained in strategic management. She has also held the position of Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs in the MDC.

Her political achievements include among others being the first woman in Zimbabwe to chair the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee, youngest person to serve as a councillor, one of the only two women to hold a position in the MDC Management Committee after she was elected Deputy Secretary General at the party’s second National Cogress in Bulawayo on the 25th of February 2005.

She is a founding member of the National Constitutional Assembly and strongly believes in the fight for a new and democratic constitution in Zimbabwe. She bemoans the collapsing economy in Zimbabwe and is angry with the harassment that the poor people of the country have to endure when their houses are destroyed and the little things that they are trying to sell to earn a living are brutally taken away from them by the Robert Mugabe regime.

Says Misihairabwi-Mushonga: "These are the poorest of the poor and when they are arrested they get kicked around, they are abused and they are forced to pay fines, those who don’t have money have to spend days in filthy cells sometimes without even being taken to the courts. This pains me greatly. You have a government that has run down the economy to the extent that we have 75% unemployment. That same government then tells people that they can’t employ themselves and destroys their tuck shops. I mean how crazy can you get?"

Misihairabwi-Mushonga also serves as the Deputy Secretary for the Southern African Public Accounts Committee in Southern Africa. She has worked with the civic society especially on issues such as HIV/AIDS, women’s issues and development issues. She is a devout Christian and is married with one child.

**BREAKING NEWS......ROY BENNET MDC DEPUTY MINISTER HAS BEEN ARRESTED...**UPDATES**

>> Friday, February 13, 2009

7 months ago: Roy Bennett, a senior member of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change in neighboring Zimbabwe speaks during an interview with the Associated Press in Johannesburg, Monday June 23, 2008. Bennett said while his leader, Zimbabwe's opposition candidate, Morgn Tsavngirayi, has pulled out of the runoff set for Friday, the party hopes a free and fair vote can be held later with the help of African leaders

.

MDC media alert: Roy Bennett, MDC Treasurer General and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate has just been abducted by Police from the Law and Order section at Prince Charles airport just outside Harare. The police were led by one Assistant Commissioner Nyongwe.

He was taken in a white Toyota with registration number is AAP 4851. We understand that they are taking him to Marondera, where there is notorious torture and interogation base, the same place MDC Secretary General Tendai Biti was taken upon his return from South Africa. Details to follow .

(SW Radio Africa: We believe arrest warrants have been issued for election expert Topper Whitehead and MDC MP for Marondera, Ian Kay. We also believe the leaders of the three political parties are in an emergency meeting and the swearing in of the Cabinet is delayed.)

**Mugabe swears in cabinet, despite arrest**

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe swore in ministers to a new unity government Friday, despite the arrest of a top official in Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's party one hour earlier.

A total of 36 ministers, four more than expected, recited their oaths on the lawn of the presidential mansion, finalising a power-sharing arrangement nearly a year after disputed elections.

The ceremony was held shortly after the arrest of Roy Bennett, a white farmer who became treasurer of Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and was slated to be deputy minister of agriculture.

MDC officials said the deputy ministers would take office at a later stage.

Mugabe gave some of his staunchest hardline supporters the key posts of defence, home affairs and national security.

The defence portfolio went to Emmerson Mnangagwa, seen as the president's right hand, who earned notoriety as the head of state security in the 1980s, when a North Korean-trained army brigade allegedly massacred up to 20,000 suspected dissidents from the minority Ndebele people.

Sydney Sekeramayi, who was defence minister in the last cabinet, took up the state security post.

Kembo Mohadi retained his position at home affairs, a portfolio he will share with a co-minister from Tsvangirai's party.

At home affairs, Mohadi has presided over the police during a period that saw widespread allegations against the force of rights abuses and intimidation of the MDC.

Update from the MDC:  Saturday - 00:23

Police at Mutare police station who have charged MDC Treasurer General and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate, Roy Bennett with treason, say they will keep him at the police station until tomorrow and it is only then that they can take a warned and cautioned statement. The police inability and unwillingness to take a statement from Roy Bennett 11 hours after abducting him clearly shows that these police and state agents are being remote controlled and acting on a remote controlled instruction from somewhere. (Via Press Release)

Update from the MDC — Bennett has been charged with treason: 21:52

Police have again changed charges on Roy Bennett. They have now charged him with treason. These charges are scandalous, vexatious and without bases in law, but are simply politically motivated, simply intended to justify the continued incarceration of Roy Bennett.

Roy Bennett must be released unconditionally and unharmed immediately. All state institutions must respect the rule of law, human rights, the spirit and letter of the Global Political Agreement and conduct themselves in such a manner that gives confidence to the inclusive government, so that all parties may be able to attend to the real issues of uplifting the lives of the people of Zimbabwe. The restoration of people’s freedoms, human rights and democratisation are some of the basic deliverables of the Inclusive government. This theatre of absurdity must end.

Dispite the firing of live ammunition in the air and the use of police dogs to disperse hundreds of MDC supporters surrounding the police station, MDC supporters are still at the police station demanding the immediate release of Roy Bennett.

Update - Media Statement released by the MDC: 21:30

 Update from the MDC: 20:44
Hundreds of MDC members and supporters have surrounded Mutare police station, where MDC Treasurer General and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate is being held. There is heavily armed police. Police have charged Roy Bennett with attempting to leave the country illegally. However they keep back tracking and are incoherently inconsistent on what they intend to do and charge him with.  Clearly desperate and clucthing at straws. Three lawyers are now in attendance to represent Roy Bennett.

A second MDC release that came in soon after the one above said:

Police have started firing live ammunition in the air and have brought dogs in an attempt to disperse hundreds of MDC supporters that had surrounded Mutare police station in support and demanding the release of Roy Bennett. Police intend to remove Roy Bennett from the police station to a place they have refused to disclose. The two vehicles that were used by the police to carry Roy Bennett from Prince Charles airport to Marondera and to Mutare police station are back at Mutare police station, this time without registration plates.

Update from the MDC: 19:05.

MDC Treasurer General, and Deputy Minister of Agriculture designate, Roy Bennett is now in Mutare at Mutare police station.

Police attempted to take Roy Bennett to an inaccessible rural police station. About 200 MDC Manicaland Provincial Executive and members barricaded the road and demanded the release of Roy Bennett. Lawyer representing Roy Bennett Mr. Trust Maanda negotiated with the MDC members and police returned to Mutare police station. The police station is surrounded by heavily armed police police.

Police have denied Mr. Maanda access to Roy Bennett insisting that they want to interrogate him alone.

MDC Mayor for Mutare Brian James is also at the police station.

Aid agencies say the number of cases is quadrupling every week in some rural areas. In one small village in Mashonaland West we filmed a family who had been stricken by the disease. The grandparents were lying untreated in their own waste, while two small children were also displaying the first signs of cholera. Family members said they could not afford to pay for the transport to take their relatives to the nearby clinic.
