Mugabe mauled

The MDC's triumph in capturing control of Parliament raises hopes for millions.

Watch a bit of it here

For millions of Zimbabweans, that angry look was enough to send an exhilarating message of hope. Robert Mugabe had been thwarted for the first time in years. He had insisted on opening Parliament with traditional pomp and his familiar denunciations of the West, despite a promise that he would not do so unless a power-sharing agreement was reached with Morgan Tsvangirai. Yesterday his hubris was answered - with jeers, catcalls and slogans denouncing Zanu (PF) by jubilant MDC members. The 84-year-old President raised his voice, glowered and raced through his final lines. His humiliation was broadcast live on television, plain for all to see.

This may not have been Zimbabwe's Ceaucescu moment. The Romanian dictator similarly was shocked and angry at being jeered as he delivered a speech to the crowd in December 1989; within three days he had been forced out of office and was shot dead. But it is clear that Mr Mugabe and his security forces have been out-manoeuvred at last. Police tried to ensure that the President's party would still control the legislature, despite the Opposition's victory in the parliamentary election. They seized two MPs and waited outside Parliament to arrest 17 more MDC supporters, to deny Mr Tsvangirai a majority. But they forgot to bar the back door. Inside, Zanu (PF) leaders also thought that they could count on the votes of a breakaway MDC faction. But they did not realise that a secret ballot would protect all those, including some of their own party, determined to respect the election result.

For the first time in 28 years, Mr Mugabe now has to contend with a hostile Parliament. The Opposition has already spoken of repealing repressive legislation, curbing state abuses and denying money for measures proposed by the President. Mr Mugabe is unlikely to accept this setback. His instinct, and that of his cronies who see their position threatened, will be to deploy his bullyboys in a brutal new assault on those MPs who have had the temerity to thwart him. He will also attempt to bypass Parliament, ruling by decree and using the special powers that he has awarded to himself.

Nevertheless, the MDC's triumph in capturing control of Parliament is of huge strategic and psychological importance. It will revive the MDC, which has appeared unsure of how to exploit its electoral gains, and will bolster Mr Tsvangirai's determination to hold out against attempts by Mr Mugabe to force through a power-sharing agreement that leaves all the levers of power in his own hands. It will also show a cowed country that Mr Mugabe can be defied without recourse to violence. The political victory will do little to alleviate the people's suffering, boost food supplies or cut into an inflation rate now topping 11 million per cent. But it will lift the spirits of Zimbabweans who despaired of seeing any change after their ballot box rejection of Zanu (PF).

The Opposition's control of Parliament may also make it harder for Mr Mugabe to avoid ceding some power in new talks, which Zimbabwe's neighbours still see as the only way forward. South Africa, however, will find it harder to deny that the election changed anything or that Mr Tsvangirai must have real executive powers. The hope for the rest of the world is that the ground is finally shaking under the old autocrat's feet.

Mashonaland West Situation Report

Hurungwe North - Kazangarare

Jawet Kazangarare, the notorious Zanu PF war veteran responsible for spearheading the violent persecution of MDC supporters in the Hurungwe areas, is accused of raping 13 year old Ella Ruvanga at a base camp prior to the June 27 runoff.

The case was reported to the police at Zimbabwe Republic Police Kazangarare Sub Office but no action has been taken to date, as with all the other cases of politically related violence reported countrywide where Zanu PF supporters are the perpetrators.

The victim and other young girls from the area where forcibly taken from their homes and taken to the base camp where they did household chores (cooking, washing clothes e.t.c) for the war veterans and Zanu PF youth as they went about their day to day business of terrorizing accused MDC sympathizers and supporters.

After the alleged rape, the victim did not seek medical treatment and is reported to be experiencing vaginal bleeding to date.

Hurungwe West - Magunje ,Ward 11

The Grain Marketing Board manager, Homela , Zanu PF District Coordinator ,Dr. Karonga and the Zanu PF MP for Magunje Frank Ndambakuwa have spent the previous five days denying maize grain to the winning MDC councilor for Ward 11, Ruth Chinhanho on the basis of being MDC.

They told her that she was only going to obtain maize grain from the GMB after she reformed to being Zanu PF. Frank Ndambakuwa went on further to threaten her with death, telling her that he would prefer to see her dead because of being MDC.

Ndambakuwa is responsible for the April shooting of Peterson Kwenda, who he shot in the leg for being an MDC activist. Kwenda was denied the urgent medical assistance he required as ambulances where being turned away from Karoi Hospital by State Security Agents and Zanu PF loyalists resulting in the wound be gangrenous.By the time medical help came his way it was already too late and he had to have the leg amputated in two places, below the knee and later on above the thigh.

On August 10 2008, Ndambakuwa, armed with a gun, and a certain Zanu PF youth by the name Darlington drove to Richard Chokumanda’s place, with unknown intentions. Chokumanda is a well known MDC activist in the area. He saw Ndambakuwa’s car prior to its arrival and ran for dear life. Later during the day he accidentally had a run in with Ndambakuwa at the local business centre where he threatened him with death because of his participation in the MDC.

The gun that is used for threatening MDC supporters by Frank Ndambakuwa and used in the Peterson Kwenda shooting belongs to the GMB, and he confisticates it from the security guards who guard the GMB premises whenever he feels like it.

Hurungwe West - Nyamupfukudza Town ship, Ward 26

The Nurse In Charge for Doro Clinic, Mrs Bwanari was assaulted on the 26th of June 2008 by Zanu PF youth led by a Zanu PF Councilor known as Chakanyuka after being accused of being a MDC supporter. She then sought refuge in the far away town of Kadoma amongst relatives and only returned to her place of work last week, more than a month after the assault.

After learning of her return, Chakanyuka assembled his band of Zanu PF thugs and assaulted Mrs Bwanari again, this time seriously injuring her and breaking one of her ribs. Battered and bruised, she returned to her relatives in Kadoma.

Three days after the assault, two heavily pregnant women arrived at the clinic seeking medical attention only to find out that the only nurse for the clinic, Mrs Bwanari was not around, chased away from her place of work by Zanu PF youth and the only personnel manning the clinic were HIV/AIDS care givers who could not help the two patients in any way.

One of the patients died at the clinic due to heavy bleeding and the other while being transported to far away Magunje Clinic aboard an ox drawn scotch cart. Residents from the community were outraged by the deaths, teamed up and approached Councilor Chakanyuka rebuking him for the continued assaults on health workers and laying the two womens deaths squarely on him.

Chakanyuka then travelled to the Ministry Of Health offices Karoi in a bid to request another nurse for Doro Clinic. His bid was denied on the grounds of the ongoing assaults and the clinic is now on the verge of closure due to lack of medical personnel, with devastating effects on the community.

Hurungwe West - Magunje, Ward 13

Vaison Kavharasiya worked as an ambulance driver for Karoi General Hospital but was dismissed from work after being accused for being an MDC supporter. He then returned to his rural homestead in Rengwe, a community not very far from the town of Karoi, and took over the position of Village Head from his ageing father.

He benefited from the farm mechanization program, launched by the Zanu PF government as a vote buying gimmick just prior to the March 29 elections and continued ahead of the June rerun. He was given a knapsack and ox drawn plough.

After the rerun, Happy Dandawa , the Chief for Rengwe area, to whom all Village Headmen report to, organized Zanu PF youth goon squads that moved around the area collecting the government given farm implements from all residents accused of being MDC after the March 29 election, including those given to Vaison Kavharasiya.

Information reached him that a jealous relative had “sold him out”, telling the Chief that he was MDC and had benefited from the government program. Vaison approached his relative and a fist fight ensued yesterday that resulted in injury.

This shows the polarization along political lines that has become prevalent amongst most if not all communities in rural Zimbabwe, and has resulted in the destruction of previously cohesive family structures.

Chief Dandawa is now calling for the forced removal of all residents accused of being MDC. The same Chief is responsible for spearheading the pre June 27 assault by Zanu PF youth of Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Zimbabwe pastor, Pastor Muguti resulting in his hospitalization. The flimsy reason given for the assault was that the rate of attendance at Pastor Muguti’s church is always high while attendance to Zanu PF rallies is low. So the Pastor is MDC because he is not instructing his flock to attend Zanu PF rallies. The assault resulted in condemnation from Zimbabwean church bodies.

Thousands more have been killed over the years, including over 20 000 people who were murdered during Gukurahundi in the Midlands and Matabeleland provinces of Zimbabwe. Africa, especially SADC, must take a strong position against Robert Mugabe and his illegitimate government.

JABALANI SIBANDA..ZIMBABWE'S MURDERING WAR VET...

HARARE, Jabulani Sibanda, chairman of the Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association, does not believe reports claiming that veterans who fought for and achieved Zimbabwe's independence from Britain in 1980 are behind the ongoing political violence in the country.

He says the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) represents foreign interests and has to be stopped, which means Zimbabweans should never vote the opposition into power. "That can never happen. That is why we have to educate the people at rallies; invite them to different meetings so that they have an understanding of what is happening."

"As war veterans, our loyalties lie with President Robert Mugabe, a tried and tested revolutionary, who is also the patron of our association. So, based on that, it has to be understood that we support his candidature and have travelled around the country to mobilise support for him. However, let me emphasise that my leadership style is strictly that of non-violence.

"If there are any acts of violence, they are blamed on war veterans, but my question is: 'How do people know that the perpetrators would be war veterans?' There are some ZANU-PF members who have been killed by MDC supporters, but nobody says anything. Only when an MDC supporter is beaten do you hear all this noise. There are war veterans in the MDC, but I have never heard anybody blaming MDC war veterans for any political violence.

"I have instances of war veterans who have been killed, maimed and beaten by members of the MDC, but that is never reported on; I have instances of members whose homes have been destroyed and set on fire by MDC supporters, but that is never highlighted in the news - that unarmed war veterans are being killed by armed MDC supporters.

"I don't know [who is behind the violence]; I cannot answer for hundreds of thousands of people. What I can tell you is that, as an organisation, violence is something that we regard as counter-productive, especially in an election environment. It's not part of our policies. Personally, I hate violence.

"The MDC leadership have made very threatening statements about the war veterans, in the event that they come into power. They have made statements which suggest that they will exterminate all war veterans when they get into power. They have shown no respect for the role played by war veterans in removing colonial slavery.

"Now they assume that whoever attacks them would be a war veteran trying to defend their territory. Those are very misplaced assumptions because, as war veterans, we are very clear [on this]: we respect the people since the days of the war [of independence], when they provided us with information, food, clothing and other forms of assistance.

"It does not make sense for a war veteran to fight the people. You are talking about freedom fighters, who put their lives on the line in order to protect and liberate the very same people.

"As I pointed out earlier, I hate violence. I am not aware of a [hit] list, and would condemn any attacks on journalists. We have courts in this country; if anybody disagrees with the work of any journalist, then such issues should be settled in court and not at the gravesite."

Statement by Morgan Tsvangirai to the people of Zimbabwe

Thanks so much for ''unlocking'' my blog.....it has been locked for so long and I could not post anything....

Anyway welcome back......

***************************************************************************************

Here is a statement that Morgan Tsvangirai made to the people of Zimbabwe regarding the so called ''talks'' after Mutambara had signed a deal with ''mugabe and the generals''...oh yeah Mutambara is a complete zanu pf stooge...he was ''placed'' by zanu pf to do their work for them of splitting and keeping a split MDC and when the need arose he would help zanu pf and the generals cling on to power which he did yesterday by signing a deal with them.....

And way here is MT's message to the people.......

Statement to the People of Zimbabwe
13 August 2008

My Fellow Zimbabweans:

The Movement for Democratic Change has always been a people’s project. We seek nothing but the best interests of the people of our country.

Tragically, Zimbabwe has become one of the worst man-made humanitarian disasters of a new and hopeful century. At least two million Zimbabweans have already fled our homeland. An estimated half million Zimbabweans have already died of starvation, malnutrition and preventable disease.

Because of the failed policies of ZANU PF, five million Zimbabweans now face starvation and famine. We cannot allow this to happen. All of us must provide decisive leadership.

My Fellow Zimbabweans, on March 29 you voted for change. You have been clear. We will not betray you. In this respect, the MDC entered these negotiations full of hope. We put aside our grievances and reached out to ZANU PF for the good of the people.

However, any dialogue to save our country must take place in an atmosphere of mutual respect and tolerance underpinned by our shared patriotism and desire to stop the suffering, and build a prosperous future for our children.

Let me be clear, MDC entered these negotiations seeking a transformative and healing solution to the deep-seated political and economic crisis facing our country. Our objective is simple – a peaceful resolution to the crisis that respects the will of the people.

The MDC remains committed to participating in any meaningful and genuine dialogue that urgently moves this process forward.

We knew negotiations would be difficult, but a resolution that represents anything other than the will of the Zimbabwean people would be a disaster for our country. We are committed to a solution that recognizes that the people spoke on the 29th of March 2008 - a solution that ensures tangible deliverables are put on the table of Zimbabweans. A solution must thus put the people first, not leadership positions and titles.

Our members of parliament and councilors, indeed Zimbabweans of all political persuasions, are part of the transformative process. We need a government that transfers power to the elected representatives of the people to carry out the people’s mandate for change.

In the immediate days ahead, we have a historic opportunity to choose between hope or hatred, cooperation or conflict, prosperity or poverty, the will of the people or selfish interests. In short, we seek a new Zimbabwe that will provide food, jobs, dignity and healing to all our people.

To accomplish this, we need to look forward together. Only by working together can we transform our society. Only by working together can we rebuild our nation.

Although there are many dimensions to our crisis, there is one immediate and urgent step that is required:

Our people continue to face a profound humanitarian crisis. We know you are suffering. Without further delay, we are demanding that NGOs be allowed to resume humanitarian assistance – distributing food, medicines and life-saving assistance. This destructive policy of banning humanitarian assistance can be reversed with one letter.

The Zimbabwean problem is an African problem that requires an African solution. This weekend’s SADC Heads of State Summit in Johannesburg is yet another opportunity for our African brothers and sisters to offer us a hand at this decisive moment. In his role as facilitator and as incoming SADC Chairman, President Thabo Mbeki must insist on ensuring that the Zimbabwean issue is put to rest. Most importantly, President Mbeki must ensure that humanitarian assistance is resumed immediately. In addition, civic society that has been barred must be allowed to operate.

We hope that as facilitator, President Mbeki will ensure that the issues that continue to divide us at the negotiation table are resolved as soon as possible. Creativity, leadership and vision is essential in this delicate stage.

In closing, let me reiterate three points – first, we have always been committed to dialogue as the only way to resolve the current political impasse; second, we remain committed to reaching an agreement that upholds the will of the people; and third, we remain urgently concerned about the humanitarian crisis and ask for President Mbeki and SADC’s immediate assistance in securing the resumption of aid to our starving, sick and dying people.

I thank you.

May God Bless Zimbabwe.

MORE OF ''THE GENERALS'' STAMPS AND DEATH BLOWS.

While levels of violence have decreased since the June 27 presidential runoff, Human Rights Watch remains seriously concerned by ongoing rights abuses in some parts of the country. ZANU-PF and its allies continue to use camps and bases to beat and torture perceived MDC activists and supporters. With certain parts of the country such as Mashonaland East, West and Central still not accessible to NGOs and the media, it is likely that the intimidation and violence documented in this report are only a small sample of the actual cases that have occurred.

For example, on July 17 a group of ZANU-PF supporters and “war veterans” severely assaulted police officer Kingswell Muteta in Mudzi, Mashonaland East province. Muteta was visiting Mudzi to see his mother who had recently been assaulted by the same group of supporters and “war veterans.” The “war veterans” and supporters accused Muteta of visiting MDC supporters and sympathizing with them. They took Muteta to a base in Mudzi called Chimukoko and brutally beat him. Muteta was admitted at Kotwa hospital in Mashonaland East and later transferred to Avenues clinic in Harare where he died on July 25 from injuries sustained during the beating. Four other victims assaulted at the base by the “war veterans” and supporters were hospitalized at a private hospital in Harare and remain in serious condition.

Before any resolution, Zimbabwe first needs justice.

Talks in Zimbabwe aimed at breaking the political deadlock in that country cannot succeed unless the human rights violations that are the root cause of the crisis are addressed.

Lead mediator President Thabo Mbeki and other Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders should press Zimbabwe's leadership to address crucial human rights issues prior to any transitional government arising from the current negotiations.

The government of Zimbabwe has committed and continues to commit serious crimes. Multiple Human Rights Watch interviews with witnesses ranging from newly elected MDC MPs, councillors, activists, perceived MDC supporters and others demonstrate the serious nature of abuses committed by these militias. They include killings, beatings, abductions and torture.

Despite ongoing negotiations between the two parties, horrific abuses continue. Hundreds of MDC activists who fled the violence before the 27 June runoff remain in hiding while "war veterans" and youth militia continue to terrorise villagers in the rural areas. According to local non-governmental organisations, Zanu-PF and its allies have been implicated in the killing of at least 163 people and the beating and torture of more than 5,000 people over the past three months. Thirty-two of these people were killed after the 27 June runoff, and two since the two parties signed the Memorandum of Understanding. The government has made little effort to dismantle the torture camps that it established in the immediate aftermath of the 29 March elections.
